Grease
Location: Piccadilly Theatre
Danny Zuko, Sandy Dumbrowski, Betty Rizzo and Doody. These are all characters that many people know and love from the hit show Grease. For a lot of fans, this is because of the hit 1978 movie that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in the lead roles. For others, it is because of the stage musical, which was first performed inside a Broadway auditorium in 1972. It is a cultural landmark, a story regarded by all those that have seen it as a classic. And why wouldn’t it be? After all, it introduced the world to classic songs such as “Summer Nights”, “Greased Lighting”, “Sandy”, “Grease (Is The Word)”, “Hopelessly Devoted To You” and the classic “You’re The One That I Want”.
At the Piccadilly Theatre in London the Grease phenomenon is still going strong, with Ray Quinn stepping into John Travolta’s famous role of Danny Zuko in 2009. Danny is the bad boy in the 1950s town in which this is set. He is the leader of the gang known as the T Birds and has just met the new girl Sandy Dumbrowski. Sandy is not like Danny at all and is far removed from his slick, hard man persona. But they only have eyes for each other and Danny will stop at nothing to get the girl of his dreams. The show includes everything that we are all familiar with, from Betty Rizzo’s Pink Ladies to the T Birds of Zuko’s gang. It will be a treat for fans and newcomers alike.
The show has been in the capital in some form for many years and premiered in 1974, two years after the Broadway version. Audiences who have seen the show over the years will have witnessed a whole array of performers take on the iconic roles, with X Factor and Dancing on Ice’s Ray Quinn being the latest. Past favourites include Richard Gere, Craig McLachlan, Jimmy Osmond, Elaine Paige, Shane Ritchie and Tracey Ullman. The current production is the result of a revival on the back of a reality television show that sought to find the new stars to fill the roles of Danny and Sandy.
